This is an absolutely spectacular Studio Elite HDX and exactly the sort of guitar that demonstrates why James Tyler has such a devoted following. The Double Amethyst Shmear finish is the immediate standout, with layers of purple and violet giving the body an almost three-dimensional appearance. The purple pearl pickguard, black hardware and dark Macassar ebony fingerboard work brilliantly together and make this a particularly cohesive Tyler build.

The specification is equally impressive. A quarter-sawn maple neck with the Extra Thin profile, Macassar ebony board and wide/tall stainless-steel frets gives it a very fast, precise and modern playing feel. At just 7 lb 9 oz it is also a nicely balanced weight for a fully equipped Studio Elite HDX.

The HSS electronics are where the Studio Elite really separates itself from a conventional high-end S-style guitar. A pair of JTS5500 single-coils are matched with Tyler’s Super bridge humbucker, while the onboard Midboost preamp, bypass facility and series/parallel switching give the guitar a huge tonal range. It can move from articulate single-coil cleans through to much thicker boosted lead tones without losing the fundamental character of the instrument.
