Few guitar companies have had as much influence on modern music as Fender. From rock and blues to country, pop and indie, Fender guitars have shaped the sound of countless legendary recordings and performances.

Known for their distinctive designs, bright tone and exceptional playability, Fender guitars remain some of the most popular instruments in the world. In this guide, we’ll explore the history of Fender and take a look at the iconic models that have made the brand a favourite among beginners and professional musicians alike.

Fender was founded in 1946 by Leo Fender in Fullerton, California. Unlike many traditional guitar makers of the time, Leo Fender wasn’t a musician — he was an electronics technician with a passion for improving musical equipment.

In the early days of electric guitars, many instruments were difficult to manufacture and prone to feedback when amplified. Leo Fender revolutionised the industry by introducing solid-body electric guitars, which were more durable, easier to produce and far better suited to amplified music.

One of Fender’s earliest breakthroughs came in 1950 with the release of the Fender Telecaster, widely considered the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar.

Just a few years later, Fender released another instrument that would become one of the most recognisable guitars ever made: the Fender Stratocaster.

With its contoured body, three pickups and smooth tremolo system, the Stratocaster set a new standard for electric guitar design and remains one of Fender’s most famous models today.

Iconic Fender Guitar Models

Over the decades, Fender has introduced several guitars that have become staples in music across the world.

Fender Stratocaster The Stratocaster is perhaps the most famous electric guitar ever created. First introduced in 1954, it is known for its sleek double-cutaway body, versatile three-pickup configuration and comfortable contours.

The Stratocaster has been used by countless legendary players and remains incredibly popular with beginners thanks to its versatility and smooth playability.

Fender Telecaster

Released in 1950, the Telecaster is one of the simplest yet most influential guitar designs ever made.

With its slab body, two-pickup configuration and bright cutting tone, the Telecaster became a favourite in country, rock and blues music. Its straightforward design and reliability are part of the reason it has remained popular for over seventy years.

Fender Jazzmaster

Introduced in 1958, the Jazzmaster was originally designed for jazz players, though it later became especially popular in surf music and alternative rock.

Its distinctive offset body shape and unique pickup design give it a warm, rich tone that stands apart from the Stratocaster and Telecaster.

Fender Jaguar

The Jaguar arrived in 1962 as Fender’s most advanced guitar at the time. Featuring a shorter scale length and complex switching system, it offered players a wide range of tonal options.

Like the Jazzmaster, the Jaguar later found a devoted following among indie, alternative and grunge musicians.

Fender Today

Today, Fender continues to produce a wide range of instruments for players of all levels. From affordable beginner models to high-end custom shop creations, the brand remains one of the most respected names in the guitar world.

Some of Fender’s most popular modern ranges include:
