Late-’80s Gibson reissues are becoming increasingly appreciated — and this ’62 SG Standard is a great example of why. Built during a period when Gibson were using high-quality Honduran mahogany and traditional construction methods, these guitars have a resonance and midrange punch that feels very different to many modern SGs.The slim taper neck is fast but not insubstantial, and the classic bevelled body with the ’61-style heel gives excellent upper-fret access without sacrificing tone. Acoustically it’s lively and woody; plugged in it delivers that unmistakable SG snap — biting upper mids, tight low end, and plenty of growl when pushed.
This one is especially appealing due to how clean it is for its age — it feels like a well-looked-after instrument rather than a survivor that’s been dragged through decades of gigs.
Condition Report:
Excellent overall. A few very tiny impressions consistent with careful ownership, but no breaks, repairs, or modifications. Frets are in great shape, hardware is clean, and the finish presents beautifully. Remarkably tidy for a 1989 example.Part Exchange Welcome:
