  • Personal Thoughts

This is the start of the Burst story. 1958 was the year Gibson moved the Les Paul Standard off the Goldtop and onto a transparent Cherry Burst maple top, and the Historic Reissue keeps that plain maple cap character rather than chasing heavy figure. Against the rosewood board, cream plastics and nickel hardware, the faded cherry sunburst with the red stained back is exactly the look people mean when they say they want a proper ’58.

The neck is a big part of why players pick the R8 over an R9. The 1950s Rounded C carve has real depth in the hand, a touch beefier on average than a ’59, and it pairs with the long tenon, hide glue joint and non weight relieved mahogany body for that solid, resonant Historic feel. At 8.81 lb it sits in a very workable place for a non chambered Les Paul.

Custombucker Alnico III pickups are the other headline. Lower output and more open than a hot modern humbucker, with the harmonic detail and dynamics people want from a PAF inspired set: bridge bite under gain, neck warmth without getting cloudy. CTS pots, paper in oil caps and a Switchcraft toggle keep the wiring period correct.

Ours is a 2017 build, serial 87325, with matching COA, hang tag and Final Pack Checklist dated 14 Feb 2017. If you want the first year of the Burst formula without stepping into figured Private Stock money, this is the Historic platform that does it cleanly.
