The ES-336 is one of Gibson’s most interesting Custom Shop models because it sits in a really clever middle ground between a Les Paul and an ES-335. The smaller body makes it feel tighter and more compact in the hands, but the semi-hollow carved construction still gives it more air and openness than a straight solidbody. This one sounds especially appealing with the figured hand-selected top and Aqua Blue finish, as that is exactly the sort of spec that makes a 336 feel more special than the standard burst examples. I also think the ’57 Classics are a big part of why these work so well. They suit the model’s naturally balanced, articulate voice and keep it feeling classy rather than overly aggressive. A mint Aqua Blue figured-top ES-336 is a very attractive Custom Shop piece and a nice step away from the usual 335 crowd.
