This is a seriously cool take on the ’56 Les Paul Standard and about as far removed visually from the traditional Goldtop as you can get. The Purple Sparkle finish completely transforms the model, giving the guitar a much more flamboyant, custom-order feel while still retaining the classic mid-’50s P-90 specification underneath.

The Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged treatment works particularly well here, taking the edge off the sparkle finish with subtle checking and aged hardware rather than overwhelming it with heavy wear. The result is a guitar that still looks bold and unusual, but with enough vintage character to stop it feeling overly modern.

Underneath the finish it remains pure ’56 Les Paul: mahogany body and neck, carved maple top, rosewood board, substantial ’50s-style neck carve and twin P-90s. Those pickups give the guitar a more open, raw and immediate voice than a humbucker-equipped Les Paul, with plenty of bite and articulation while still retaining the thickness and sustain associated with the platform.

A genuinely distinctive Murphy Lab build and a great option for someone who wants the historic ’56 specification without the usual Goldtop aesthetic.

Overseas import sourced from supplier and presents exceptionally well, with no noteworthy marks, fret wear or signs of use beyond Gibson Custom’s intentional Ultra Light Aged treatment. The checking and aged hardware are all part of the original Murphy Lab specification.
