Personal Thoughts:
The Murphy Lab Ultra Heavy Aged Goldtop is one of the most convincing vintage-style reissues Gibson currently produces, and this 2025 example absolutely nails the look and feel of a hard-played late-’50s original. The ageing work is deep and tactile — extensive lacquer checking, authentic wear-through, and dulled hardware that gives the guitar a genuinely broken-in presence straight out of the case.
Goldtop finishes particularly suit heavy ageing, and the wear patterns here feel organic and believable rather than theatrical. It looks like a guitar that’s lived a full life on stages and in studios.
Tonally, the P-90–equipped ’57 Reissue is raw, punchy, and incredibly expressive. You get thick, woody cleans with plenty of midrange authority, and when pushed it snarls and growls in a way humbuckers simply can’t replicate. It’s dynamic, responsive, and endlessly fun to play.
This is a serious player’s Goldtop with huge personality.
