Personal Thoughts:
The Murphy Lab has quickly become the benchmark for modern-aged Gibsons, and this ’57 Goldtop is a perfect example of why. Headed by Tom Murphy himself, the division has nailed the balance between authenticity, feel, and restraint — nothing forced, nothing overdone.
This Darkback Goldtop pairs a mahogany body with a plain maple top, a combination prized for its warmth, midrange punch, and unmistakable vintage response. The Light Aged Double Gold nitro finish looks superb in the flesh, giving just enough wear and patina to feel broken-in without tipping into heavy relic territory.
The chunky ’50s C neck is exactly what you want on a guitar like this — substantial, comfortable, and confidence-inspiring in the hand. Paired with the rosewood board, 12" radius, and narrow tall frets, it delivers that classic Les Paul feel with excellent control and articulation.
Tonally, the Custombucker Alnico III pickups are the star of the show. Open, harmonically rich, and exceptionally dynamic, they sit right in the sweet spot between clarity and warmth. Clean tones bloom beautifully, while driven sounds retain definition and vintage bite without harshness.
This is a Les Paul that works just as well as a serious player’s guitar as it does a collector-grade piece.
