Personal Thoughts:
The Murphy Lab Ultra Heavy Aged ’59s are some of the most convincing vintage-style Les Pauls Gibson has ever produced, and this Kindred Burst example is no exception. The finish work is exceptionally well judged — deep lacquer checking, authentic wear patterns, and a softened, broken-in feel that genuinely evokes a well-played late ’50s original rather than an overdone relic.
The Kindred Burst itself is a fantastic colour choice for an R9 — warm, slightly muted, and very natural-looking, with a subtle transition that suits the heavy ageing perfectly. It’s a burst that feels mature and believable rather than flashy.
Tonally, this guitar delivers everything you’d expect from a great Murphy Lab R9: woody, resonant lows, a rich and vocal midrange, and an open, airy top end. The Custombuckers are dynamic and touch-sensitive, responding beautifully to pick attack and volume control changes. It’s a guitar that feels alive in the hands and inspires you to play.
