This is a seriously important signature Les Paul and one of Gibson’s more interesting Jimmy Page pieces, because it is not just another artist model with a different finish.
The whole point of the Number Two is that it recreates Page’s second main Burst, the guitar he bought in 1973 as a backup to his famous Number One, but which later developed its own identity because of the extra switching and tonal options built into it. That is a big part of why this model is so appealing — it is based on a real, heavily personalised working guitar rather than a cleaner, more straightforward vintage replica. Gibson’s launch material for the model specifically described it as based on Page’s modified Number Two and highlighted the expanded electronics and custom finish.
A quick way to explain Page’s No.1 / No.2 / No.3 is this:
Number One is the legendary 1959 Sunburst Les Paul Page bought from Joe Walsh in 1969, and it became his main Led Zeppelin guitar. It is the best-known of all Page Les Pauls and the one most people picture first.
Number Two is another 1959 Burst, bought later in 1973 as a backup, but modified much more heavily with extra switching and wiring options. That is the guitar this reissue is based on.
Number Three is a much murkier, less universally documented guitar in Page lore, generally discussed as a later, more obscure Les Paul associated with additional modifications and far less central to his public image than No.1 or No.2. In collector terms, No.1 is the icon, No.2 is the modded player’s guitar, and No.3 is the outlier. What makes this particular Gibson especially strong is that it is a Tom Murphy aged example, which is a big plus on a Page model because the real Number Two was never about pristine showroom condition in the first place. The aged finish and the Page Burst look give it much more of that road-used, personalised character. It also sounds like exactly the sort of guitar collectors want: mint, under-the-bed, investment-grade, and previously cherished by one careful owner. A very desirable Jimmy Page signature Gibson and one of the better artist models Gibson has done because it has a real story and a genuinely different spec behind it. The market also clearly treats the Number Two as a serious collectible, with dealer asks ranging well into five figures depending on condition, signed status, and originality.
Condition Report
Mint collector’s condition. An under-the-bed example that has clearly been very well kept by its previous owner. Presents exceptionally well overall and remains a highly attractive investment-grade piece.
