This is a beautiful early PRS 513 Rosewood and a particularly strong example of one of the most ambitious designs PRS produced in the mid-2000s. The Vintage Natural finish lets the figured maple top do all the talking, while the solid rosewood neck gives the guitar a much more exotic and substantial feel than a conventional mahogany-neck PRS.
The 513 electronics are the real centrepiece. Rather than a traditional pickup layout, the guitar uses five individual pickup elements combined through PRS’s switching system to produce 13 distinct sounds. The 5-way selector works in conjunction with the 3-way mode switch, allowing the guitar to move between heavier humbucking tones, clearer vintage-style humbucker voices and true single-coil-style sounds. It is an unusually broad tonal palette while still remaining intuitive once you get used to the layout.
The rosewood neck is another major part of the appeal and gives these early 513s a distinctive feel in the hand. This example has since had the back of the neck properly lemon-oiled following the photographs, which has restored the darker, richer appearance of the rosewood after it had begun looking a little dry and pale in the images.
A superb early 513 with a very elegant natural finish, highly desirable rosewood neck construction and one of PRS’s most versatile electronic designs. These early rosewood-neck examples have a real identity of their own and are increasingly interesting from a collector perspective.
